How I can help
I have reached the fortunate point in my life where I am able to spend my entire working life immersed in film. I balance my time between writing (and rewriting) my own screenplays, and sharing my knowledge of story with film school students, fellow screenwriters and film producers. I run Screenwriting Courses at AFTRS, the national film school, provide script assessment and story consultancy services, and try to identify exciting film projects to nurture through to production. Maybe I can help you tell your story.

I’m a screenwriter and web developer and avid reader of your blog. I love your blog.
I recently developed a screenwriting app called Logline. The idea for Logline was born out of what I saw as an inadequacy in other screenwriting software. When writing a script, I could never get a sense for the structure of my screenplay when interacting with the software. Logline builds the story structure into the interface.

If you have a chance, I’d love to get your feedback about the app.
Thanks,
Joe
Hi Allen, I recently asked this question, but seem can’t find your reply. Sorry for asking the same question twice.
Have you written any feature films that have been produced?
I’d love to take a look.
Not yet, Mark. But hopefully you (and I) won’t have to wait much longer. Watch this space.
Hi Allen,
I’m just writing to say thanks. I did your Introduction to Screenwriting course last weekend, and learned an amazing amount from it!
My head is still spinning from just how much I ‘didn’t’ know about screenwriting, despite having already studied it at uni a few years ago and having written two feature film scripts. For the first time, I feel like I can really be a professional screenwriter!
By the way, I was the guy that was recommended to your course by one of your ex-students, Joseph Weilguny. He said you were great, and you are! I’d recommend you to anyone without hesitation.
Thanks again,
Pat Garrett.
Hi Allen,
I’m wondering if you would have any information please regarding the best way to locate paying scriptwriting (screenwriting) jobs for an Australian professional writer with a non-film school background. I am already in the industry in another capacity. Is it best to approach production companies of recently-funded or ongoing series with a portfolio, or is there a fast-track path for graduating scriptwriters that I am unaware of?
Many thanks for your advice,
Cheers,
Sara
Hi, Sara,
The best way to get paid work as a screenwriter is to have a kitbag full of kick-arse scripts. Screenplays written to your own original ideas. And possibly spec scripts written for existing TV shows (and preferably not for the series you want to work on). If you’ve taken the time to write without being paid, and you’ve proven you can capture character and tell a story, then you’ve got a great shot. But if you haven’t got great screenplays, they won’t be willing to offer you an apprenticeship. Screenwriting graduates of AFTRS will hopefully emerge with more craft, and they might be able to get people to look at their work, but then the work needs to stand on its own two feet.
