At Cracking Yarns, we believe passionately in the power of story and that most Australian films fail because their scripts lack good story structure and character development. We can help you realise the potential of your film idea by guiding you towards a story structure that delivers emotional power at its climax.

I’m an Australian screenwriter who’s lived and worked in England, Ireland and Hollywood.

My romantic comedy Her and Her Bloody Opera was funded by Screen Australia and selected by Screen NSW for the prestigious Arista Script Development Workshop. It has just been financed by a major US investor.

My Irish comedy-drama TV series, Close Quarters, was developed for the BBC and optioned by Company Pictures (Shameless, Elizabeth 1, Skins).

I adapted the novel Happiness for FilmFour and my feature, Like me only rich, was optioned by Harbour Pictures (Calendar Girls). I also developed the feature animation Lamb Stu for Dreamworks.

Currently I am writing a high concept romantic comedy on spec – with another ready to follow.

I also teach screenwriting at AFTRS – Australia’s national Film & TV school.

One of my particular areas of expertise is structure. If you have a project that has a great concept but the story isn’t quite working, we should talk. In a short story consultation, I can generally identify where the narrative needs to developed and save you months of wasted development time.

If you’re looking for an experienced screenwriter, script doctor or story consultant, please get in touch.

Dear Allen,

I have only just recently discovered your site (as well as the thrill of writing) and found it immensley helpful. I have already registered to participate in your Introduction to Screenwriting Course for February. I would also like to thank you for introducing me to Joseph Campbell. I have just completed reading the Power of Myth and its been a long while since an author and writter has challenged by thinking and changed my view of the world (even just slightly) in the way he has.
