Story Analyst – Script Assessment

Allen Palmer has worked as a Story Analyst in Hollywood and the UK. After studying at UCLA in 1994 – and being introduced to the work of Joseph Campbell and Chris Vogler – he read for the Sundance Institute in LA. In London from 1998-2000, he was principal external reader for Granada Film and from 2001-2004 he consulted on story to the UK Film Council – both the Development Fund and the Premier Fund.
He was the judge of the Comedy section of the UK Film Council’s “25 Words or Less Competition” and also consulted to The Script Factory. All up, Allen has read more than 1000 screenplays.
At Cracking Yarns, we believe passionately in the power of story and that most Australian films fail because their scripts lack good story structure and character development. We can help you realise the potential of your film idea by guiding you towards a story structure that delivers emotional power at its climax.

It’s widely acknowledged that most Australian films go into production with screenplays that have been insufficiently developed. The characters might fail to engage, there’s not enough narrative drive or escalation or the story might fail to resolve in a way that leaves the audience emotionally satisfied. I can help you avoid that unfortunate fate.

I am a bit of a story whiz. I’ve been honing my understanding of story structure over the last 25 years as a screenwriter, script reader, story consultant and now screenwriting lecturer at AFTRS, Australia’s national film school.

After graduating from UCLA Extension- and being introduced to the work of Joseph Campbell and Chris Vogler – I read for the Sundance Institute in LA.

In London from 1998-2000, I was principal external reader for Granada Film and from 2001-2004 I consulted on story to the UK Film Council – both the Development Fund and the Premier Fund.

I was the judge of the Comedy section of the UK Film Council’s “25 Words or Less Competition” and also consulted to The Script Factory. All up, I’ve read more than 1000 screenplays.

I believe passionately in the power of story and can help you realise the potential of your film idea by guiding you towards a story structure that takes the audience on a more powerful emotional journey.

Here are the story consultation and script assessment services I can offer:

  • Script Assessment (verbal report) $500 (plus GST) – Recommended
  • Script Assessment (written report) $1000 (plus GST)
  • Story consultation $150/hr (plus GST)

As you can see, I recommend the option of a verbal script assessment report (either over the phone or preferably, over a coffee). Too much time and money is wasted in this country writing incredibly detailed script notes when the key issues can be identified and communicated very quickly. Very often I can tell whether a script is going to work or not just from the logline.

If you want to give your screenplay the greatest possible chance of success, please get in touch.

Hi Allen,
Just found your site. Great to know there’s something like this in Australa.
Could you please tell me how much it costs to have a script analysed?
Also is there a charge to tell me if an idea/logline is in your opinion a marketable concept
Shane
